LUAMEL (2021) | Korean Rock / Alt / Post Punk

10 / 10

"im in love with this band now thank you very much. also need to start levelling up on my korean vocab there’s no one talking about this band out there (HOW!!?) the need to understand the lyrics is now a necessity”

what is this madness that is 혜성. I guess im very much putting up this band with The Rose, I mean those mad vocals and strings on War!!??? Holy fuck…. that riff at 2:50 is where i can levitate…. okay just listen to that bass work on River. is fuckign beautiful beh what is this album laced with!!??? Its like paramore met a post rock group and had a kid yo tf? They start off so mellow, beautiful vocals, and then that dramatic peak after the first verse- genius. Just listen to Follow just teasing for a build up and holding it it off for that perfect moment. Its beautiful how they mellow down the whole facade of the album with 고래, that perfect dip before an absolute drop….and then 별과 행성 reeling in that slow beautiful gradual drop to such a perfect high

Epik High Is Here 下 (Part 2) - Epik High
(2022) | K Hip - Hop, Rap

10 / 10

"Someone writes “for now, we stay drunk on poetry” and the experience becomes cathartic.

When you're lost, remember, Epik High is here

Every single song, embodied within a core memory, some nice breezy, bright, the rest ; painful memories you really cant seem to comfort yourself about it, unless and until you tell yourself about it.I love how epik high tracks have so much of history in them, from samples to lyrics referencing to their past or references to a quote from say a tweet they once sent out, its just, everything is like an education on its own .

  • Here : reeling it in from the last track of Epik High is Here Part 1 - "Wish You Were Here”

  • Prequel : “Failure is the mother of success, My success is an orphan”; classic hip hop beats, and a chronicle of humble beginnings to a life of success, organically, perfectly. And the whole outro a salute to their discography damn this is a good album.

  • Super Rare - my first wonstein and damn he can sing. I love Mithra’s rap style, its just a very chill flow and the dude never fails to miss an emotion in those tones. A lot of “soul mapping” references hmm I wonder… umm hello there’s a violin backing in this chorus hello?? Just a fun little track celebrating the super rare in life.

  • Gray So Gray - another Younha collab, I love her in their tracks. Lyricism and flow, ugh. The inner struggles of not admitting yourself completely in someone else’s hands even though you claim to love them, that withdrawal, damn. I did it to live, to smile, for me for you, aah, this is beautiful.

  • BRB : oh to be able to fit your life into a travelling suitcase, only to have you question every single decision that led you here, and to quote it with “out the window of the plane I see thе world tilt its time to say goodbye” oh, magnificent. Reminds me of every time EH goes on long tours, and tablo’s busy talking about how he cant wait to catch the latest marvel movie with Haru, or how all of the members just want to be back home amidst the love of well, creating art.

  • I Hated Myself : a solemn piano and all I feel is solitude listening to this; “I am imprinted as an existence that I shouldn't be” - damn. Self love, truly does not come easily to all of us, most of us…. “airplane mode but I put my wings back” oh.

  • Rich Kids Anthem : another favourite! Lee Hi meets Epik High is chef’s kiss. Breezy, a needed break in between the album I suppose, reminds me of the colour yellow.

  • Face ID: okay its got an mv thats pretty self explanatory. Aah the world of keyboard warriors. Hehe that annyeonghaseyo in JUSTHIS’s verse hehe this really be a diss track huh.

*- from here on out till the end, its 3 songs, and 3 piano melodies portraying 3 different emotions - *

  • Piano For Sale : Im gonna cry this is hauntingly painful yet, beautiful. the for sale in the title makes me way too sad.

  • Family Portrait : starts off with the winding of a music box, the memories of a home, of this typical asian home, with the quote “in our home silence was as sacred as rice”. This, this song, where Tablo opens up about his painful past, the consequences during which he lost a loved one, a Stanford kid pushed into the world of online abuse, and a tarnished image that exists till this day, this song is extremely close and personal to him and you can feel it. There’s so much pain in this. Wouldn’t wish this on an enemy. Even with Mithra’s story, its amazing how people; human beings are capable of holding on to so much pain, because, sometimes if not always, we really dont have an option. Just bottle it up and hope it goes away but it really doesnt, even scars remind you of when and how you got it.

  • Champagne : aaah a concert sample! Happy piano notes, of a future much hopeful, of being true to their art of a surround system of good people; like a “Thank You” note on the last page of the pamphlet on an album. Beautiful. Around 2 decades of beautiful heartfelt poems, confessions and hopes; only regret in my life right now in the past few years of knowing the existence of Epik High? I wish I knew them back then. Seldom does an artist, a musician, a poet have the capacity to change someone's life for the better.
